Alongside Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer is one of the "Big Five" in professional golf. All these players were born within 12 months of each other, have won at least one Major and helped the European Ryder Cup team to several victories. Langer won the Masters twice (1985 and 1993) and captained the European team in its 2004 Ryder Cup victory in Oakland Hills. In 1986, the 49-year-old was the first number one in the newly created world ranking list. Many spectators will once again have their fingers crossed for Langer in 2009, hoping that the man from Augsburg can finally win the BMW International Open after finishing runner-up on five occasions in the past. Together with his brother Erwin, Langer is currently heading the German bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.
