Rookie dominates Open de France.
Pablo Larrazabal is the new champion of the BMW supported 2008 Open de France. In the event held at the golf club “Le Golf National”, located close to Paris, the Spaniard prevailed with a total result 269 strokes (15 under par) over Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie (-11).
Thanks to his four outstanding rounds (65, 70 67 and 67), Larrazabal proved to be just invincible in the oldest tournament held on the European continent. Just five years ago, the 25-year old European Tour rookie accompanied his elder brother as caddie when the latter contested the Open de France – and now, he received a €666,660 winners’ cheque for having won the tournament himself. And just two weeks ago, Larrazabal had had to contest a 36-hole qualifying tournament to obtain the opportunity to compete in the Open de France.

With his triumph at “Le Golf National”, the Spaniard did not only secure the European Tour card for the coming two years alone but also leaped up to 17th in the “Ryder Cup European Points List”. Furthermore, he also made a big step up in the European Tour Order of Merit. With €779,917 on his tally, he now holds eighth, right behind Martin Kaymer (€995,993), winner of the 2008 BMW International Open.

“I promise you I don’t know what I did! I know that today I played great golf. Today and yesterday was probably the best golf of my life. I feel great,” said the surprise winner.

Behind Larrazabal and Montgomerie, Sören Hansen (-10) finished third. Richard Green (-8) came fourth, followed by Lee Westwood, third in the US Open, and Markus Brier (both -7).
