44TH RYDER CUP.
Redemption for Europe in Rome.
The 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome saw the European Ryder Cup team celebrate another home victory, meaning they are now undefeated on European soil since 1997. Captain Luke Donald’s team led 10.5:5.5 after the first two days, but Sunday’s singles still proved to be a tense affair. It was Tommy Fleetwood who eventually got his team over the line with a 3&1 win against Rickie Fowler. The 16.5:11.5 triumph represents redemption for the European team, having suffered a 9:19 defeat in Whistling Straits (USA) two years ago. That tournament marked BMW’s debut as Worldwide Partner for the Ryder Cup. The premium car manufacturer reprised this role in the Italian capital, where the unique team competition took place for the 44th time.
WIRE-TO-WIRE VICTORY.
European team captain Luke Donald had set out the strategy – and the aim was clear: full throttle from the very first stroke. His players did just that, making a lightning-quick start as they won all the foursomes on Friday morning. This was the first time in the history of the competition that a European team had made such an emphatic start. The home team never looked back from that point, even though the defending champions did manage to make it a little tense at times on the final day.
The most successful player in Rome was world number two Rory McIlroy, who played all five matches and picked up four points. The triumph in Italy saw captain Donald extend his personal Ryder Cup record. He was on the winning team in each of his four appearances as a player, and his two outings as vice-captain.
UNIQUE.
A THRILLING ATMOSPHERE IN ROME.
Every two years, individual sportspeople are formed into teams that do not compete for prize money but play for honour and glory, for their continent. And the fans also support their team with passion and creativity only seen in golf during the Ryder Cup. All of this lends the duel between Europe and a very special aura, which we have attempted to capture in this image gallery.
DRIVE TO GLORY.
As Worldwide Partner, BMW supported the Ryder Cup 2023 with all-electric mobility, allowing the members of the golf and organising teams to enjoy zero-emission transport. BMW customers unable to be there to watch the Ryder Cup live were still able to experience the sporting dramas and the electrifying atmosphere for which this unique golf event is so well-known: for the first time in the history of the Ryder Cup, BMW offered live in-car broadcasts and enabled customers to watch every stroke live in the new BMW 7 Series, as well as streaming a wide range of on-demand content.
